Doubles PT Sessions
"Can my husband and I train together?"
"We're workout buddies, can we share a trainer?"
You hear this all the time. Two people want to train together with one trainer. Maybe it's a couple. Maybe it's two friends who motivate each other. Maybe it's a cost-saving option you want to offer.
The PT booking system is built for one-on-one sessions. But here's a clever workaround using the class system that works beautifully for doubles training.
The Concept
Instead of trying to squeeze two people into a PT slot, you treat the doubles session as a tiny private class. Capacity of 2, not published to the general membership, with only your chosen members added manually.
It takes a few minutes to set up the first time, but once it's configured, scheduling doubles sessions is quick and easy.
Step 1: Create a "Doubles PT" Class Type
First, you need a class type specifically for doubles sessions.
Go to your class types and create a new one:
Class Type: Doubles PT Session
───────────────────────────────────────
Name: Doubles PT Session
Description: Semi-private personal training for 2 people
Duration: 60 minutes (or whatever you offer)
Default Capacity: 2
───────────────────────────────────────
This class type won't show up on your public schedule. It's just a container for the doubles sessions you'll create.
Step 2: Create a Doubles PT Membership
Now you need a membership that gives people credits specifically for doubles sessions.
Create a new membership:
Membership: Doubles PT Package
───────────────────────────────────────
Type: Class Membership
Sessions: 8 (or whatever package size you want)
Price: $400 (or your doubles rate)
───────────────────────────────────────
Here's the key part. Expand the Advanced Settings:
Look for "Restrict to specific classes" and select your Doubles PT Session class type.
Advanced Settings:
───────────────────────────────────────
☑ Restrict to specific classes
└── ☑ Doubles PT Session
───────────────────────────────────────
This means credits from this membership can ONLY be used for Doubles PT Sessions. Not your regular yoga class, not the group HIIT, just the doubles sessions you create for them.
Step 3: Add the Membership to Your Members
Now assign this membership to the people who'll be training together.
For each person in the duo:
- Go to their member profile
- Add the "Doubles PT Package" membership
- Process payment (or however you handle it)
Both people now have credits that only work for Doubles PT Sessions.
Jessica Adams - Memberships
───────────────────────────────────────
Doubles PT Package
├── Credits: 8 remaining
└── Restricted to: Doubles PT Session
───────────────────────────────────────
Mike Adams - Memberships
───────────────────────────────────────
Doubles PT Package
├── Credits: 8 remaining
└── Restricted to: Doubles PT Session
───────────────────────────────────────
Jessica and Mike are a couple who want to train together. They each have their own credits.
Step 4: Create the Session on the Calendar
When it's time to schedule a doubles session, create it directly on the calendar.
Click on the calendar slot and create a new class:
New Class
──────────────────────── ───────────────
Class Type: Doubles PT Session
Date: Tuesday, January 21
Time: 6:00 PM
Duration: 60 minutes
Instructor: Sarah (or whichever trainer)
Capacity: 2
☐ Publish for enrollment ← LEAVE THIS UNCHECKED
───────────────────────────────────────
Important: Don't publish it for enrollment.
This keeps the session private. It won't appear on the class schedule for other members to book. It's just sitting there on the calendar, waiting for you to add people manually.
Step 5: Add the Members Through Attendance
Now manually add Jessica and Mike to the session.
Open the class you just created and go to the attendance/roster page:
- Click "Add Attendee"
- Search for Jessica Adams
- Add her (one credit is used from her Doubles PT Package)
- Click "Add Attendee" again
- Search for Mike Adams
- Add him (one credit is used from his package)
Doubles PT Session - Tue Jan 21 at 6:00 PM
───────────────────────────────────────
Instructor: Sarah
Capacity: 2/2
Attendees:
1. Jessica Adams (Doubles PT Package)
2. Mike Adams (Doubles PT Package)
───────────────────────────────────────
Done. Jessica and Mike are booked for their doubles session with Sarah.
Unpublished doesn't mean invisible to them. The session won't appear on the public class schedule for other members to book, but Jessica and Mike will still see it on their personal "My Classes" page once you've added them. They'll know when and where to show up—they just can't stumble onto it and book themselves.
The Workflow Going Forward
Once you've done the initial setup (class type + membership), scheduling new doubles sessions is quick:
- Create the session on the calendar (don't publish)
- Add both members through the attendance page
- Done
Each session takes maybe 2 minutes to set up.
Why This Works Well
Separate Credit Tracking
Jessica and Mike each have their own credits. When you add them to a session, each person uses one of their own credits.
If Jessica cancels, her credit is returned. Mike's stays used (unless he cancels too).
No shared credit pools. No confusion about who used what.
Trainers See Everything
The trainer (Sarah) sees the doubles session on her calendar just like any other class. She knows who's coming. She can email them if something changes.
Full History
Every session is tracked. You can see:
- How many doubles sessions they've done
- Which trainer they worked with
- Attendance history
- Credit usage
Same audit trail as everything else.
Flexible Pairings
The membership is per-person, not per-couple. So if Jessica wants to do a doubles session with her sister instead of Mike one week, that works too. Just add whoever you want to each session.
Pricing Considerations
Doubles PT is typically priced somewhere between single PT and two single sessions:
Example Pricing:
───────────────────────────────────────
Single PT Session: $80/person
Doubles PT Session: $50/person ($100 total)
Member saves: $30 compared to solo training
Trainer earns: $100 vs $80 for same time slot
───────────────────────────────────────
Everyone wins. The members get a discount for sharing. You get more revenue per hour. The trainer earns more per session.
Set your package pricing accordingly when you create the Doubles PT Membership.
Common Scenarios
"They Want to Start Next Week"
New couple wants doubles PT starting Tuesday.
You do:
- Add the Doubles PT Package to each of them
- Create Tuesday's session on the calendar (unpublished)
- Add both to the attendance
- Repeat for any other sessions they want to pre-book
"One Person Needs to Cancel"
Jessica can't make Tuesday, but Mike still wants to train.
Options:
Option A: Cancel Jessica only
- Remove Jessica from the attendance (credit returned if 24+ hours out)
- Mike trains solo with Sarah
- Mike uses his doubles credit for what's essentially a private session (your call if that's okay)
Option B: Cancel the whole session
- Remove both people
- Reschedule when they can both attend
- Their credits are returned
Option C: Find a substitute
- Jessica's sister wants to jump in
- Remove Jessica, add sister (if sister has doubles credits)
- Session happens with Mike + sister
"They Want Different Trainers Sometimes"
Jessica and Mike usually train with Sarah, but want to try Marcus.
No problem. When you create the session, just assign Marcus as the instructor instead of Sarah. The class type and membership don't care which trainer runs it.
"Can Three People Train Together?"
Same concept, just adjust:
- Create a "Triples PT Session" class type
- Set capacity to 3
- Create a membership restricted to that class type
- Price accordingly
The system is flexible. You're just creating small private classes.
